This is a delightful story told from the view of "Mis' Lyd" who acts as the local chaperone to the young people amongst the bayous in Louisiana. Childhood friends Ed Deeves and Ruth Mendoza are in love. Their parents do not approve and have decided to send them away to school. Ed to become a Medical Doctor and Ruth to find "a good Spanish Jew to marry". Ed and Ruth decide to run away.
