Dr Finlay and Dr Cameron face moral dilemmas when a newcomer to Tannochbrae offers her services to women who wish to terminate their pregnancies.

There's an outbreak of measles in Tannochbrae. Dr Cameron is laid up in bed convinced that he's contracted it too, but Dr Finlay diagnoses a common cold. Corporal Ian Grant goes AWOL from a military hospital with an infected leg that the Army surgeon intends to amputate. In the opinion of Finlay and specialist Sir William Duffy this is not necessary. Can the various medics reach a diagnosis for Cameron and Grant?

A domineering God-fearing father Mr Stewart is determined to keep his grown-up daughter, emotionally disturbed Esme, a spinster at home. He is furious when she attends a dance at the church social. Dr Finlay becomes concerned for her welfare but his own reputation is nearly besmirched in the process.

The doctors are greatly concerned when told they have a large tax bill to pay for a legacy payment they received some years earlier.

Dr Finlay treats a travelling salesman for a dog bite, and soon after a rabid dog is shot by a local farmer. Dr Finlay has the vaccine sent from Paris, but can the victim of the dog bite be tracked down in time?

When Janet is laid up with a quinsy, things go to pot for the doctors at Arden House, and the replacement housekeeper they engage proves insufferable.

Optician Robert Young comes to the attention of Dr Finlay when he starts behaving erratically and drinking heavily. He's treating his patients poorly and driving his wife to distraction. Is there more to his actions than meets the eye? Dr Cameron, who is preparing for a Robert Burns dinner, may have an answer.
