A Token Attempt is the first episode of series 2. Following the death of Neil Pember, Lomax is still looking for the people who framed him, whilst also looking for his son, Steve. The episode opens with a visit to Lomax by the journalist, Robinson, with a problem. His Godchild, Billie, who has become estranged from her father and step mother, and he wants Lomax to meet her and try to help her sort out her life. Max is roped into looking after a country B&B when the owner is called away suddenly. The B&B only has two guests, a married couple; the husband is on a weekend prison pass, and his wife is mixing with some dodgy characters, with a plan to relieve her husband of certain ill-gotten gains.

Max is working as a Barman at a quiet country pub...he thinks. He catches the eyes of the local ladies who wine and dine in the pub, and also the attention of the local thugs. The thugs decide to target the pub, the Landlord and his wife, but they underestimate the resourcefulness of Max to turn the tables.
