With nothing else to do for the summer, Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) take to exploring the banks of the Mississippi where they find a boat nestled in a tree. As they begin making plans to use the boat, they quickly realise that someone is living in it and it isn't long before they're introduced to its owner, Mud (McConaughey).
