Ash, May, and Max travel through a forest and encounter a flock of aggressive Taillow. One especially aggressive Taillow attacks Pikachu. An old friend arrives and helps them out.

Once again traveling with Brock, the gang meet Nikolai the Knickerbocker, who is preparing to challenge Norman, May and Max's father. But first he must capture a Zigzagoon.

Our heroes are on the trail of a Pokémon poacher, and Team Rocket is close behind!

Ash finds a Treecko trying to save a dying tree.

Treecko may have joined Ash's team, but it's still standoffish to his other Pokémon. When our heroes meet up with a wild Seviper in the woods, Ash sees this as a chance to let Treecko show what it can do! When Ash and friends stop in Rinshin Town for food and supplies, May drags Brock off to see a haunted mansion. Meanwhile, Max spots a Shroomish in an alleyway, which is odd because Shroomish normally live in forests. It turns out that the town used to be a forest where many Shroomish made their homes, and they've since been edged out by urban development. But they've been gathering in the mansion, which explains the odd things people have been seeing there. The mansion is now scheduled to be demolished, leaving the Shroomish homeless once more. When Ash discovers a sign announcing "The World's Most Powerful Pokémon," he is unable to resist challenging its Trainer, Anthony, to a battle. The Pokémon in question turns out to be a Pelipper, who wins easily by using attacks it shouldn't be able to use. Ash and friends are relaxing in a lake when they come across a group of Lotad. The Lotad help a group of three sisters grow flowers and berries for their shop. The runt of the Lotad litter is having trouble, though, and Brock gives it some advice and encouragement. Natalie, the youngest sister, develops a crush on Brock and runs off to find a Sitrus Berry to give him. Brock and company arrive just in time to save her from a wild Beedrill. Ash and friends come across their first Pokémon Contest! These competitions, hosted all over the Hoenn region, focus on the beauty of Pokémon attacks--style and technique count just as much as power! May and Max assist Janet, a Pokémon Coordinator with a beautiful Beautifly. Ash and friends finally reach Rustboro City, and Ash puts his Gym battle plans on hold as our heroes tour the Pokémon Trainer's School. Max takes to the school like a natural, but one boy at the school, Tommy, starts a rivalry with him. The boys get to have a practice battle, and Max is so caught up in strategy that he forgets to use offensive moves. Team Rocket interrupts the battle by stealing all the school's Poké Balls, and all the kids in the Trainer's School class work together to defeat Team Rocket. Time for Ash and May to battle the Rustboro Gym Leader, Roxanne. May decides she wants to become a Pokemon Coordinator, and enter contests. So Ash and Roxanne have their match. Ash uses Treeko and Pikachu for his battle, but in a Rock type Gym, electrical attacks won't be as effective, it's time to see if Pikachu's new attack move is ready.

Our heroes split up to do some shopping in Rustboro City before catching the ferry to Dewford Island, where Ash's second badge awaits. Max accidentally breaks May's PokéNav and doesn't know how he will face her. Luckily, he meets the president of the Devon Corporation, Stanwick, who fixes the PokéNav and gives Max a personal tour of the company's headquarters. While they're there, a mysterious intruder with a powerful Crawdaunt steals some important test tubes from a machine that's said to restore Pokémon fossils! May is using an outdated map of Rustboro City, and the group gets lost trying to find the ferry to Dewford Island. To make up for it, May looks for another boat to take them to Dewford Island. She meets Briney, a retired sailor, who promises to carry her and her friends across the bay. But when she brings the gang to meet him, he has inexplicably changed his story and sends them away. After Officer Jenny tells them that the same Team Aqua thief who broke into the Devon Corporation the day before has been spotted in the area, our heroes put two and two together and ...

On their way to Dewford Island on Briney's boat, Ash and friends make a stop at a beautiful bay for some swimming when they're boxed in by a huge school of Sharpedo. Brock is puzzled because Sharpedo normally travel alone. One of the Sharpedo seems to be the leader, and Brock thinks that if our heroes can defeat that one in battle, the others will stand down. But when the battle begins, Sharpedo collapses from poison immediately! Brock spends all day and night caring for the sick Sharpedo. The next morning, Team Rocket shows up and reveals that it was Seviper's Poison...

Ash and friends reach the Dewford Gym at last, but the Gym Leader, Brawly, would rather surf than battle. Disgusted at this apparent lack of work ethic, Ash marches out into the waves and demands a Gym battle immediately! But when the battle begins, Ash is too headstrong to see the flaws in his strategy. He pushes Treecko to fight harder than any Pokémon should, and Treecko is quickly defeated by Brawly's Makuhita. Team Rocket tries another ill-advised scheme to steal our heroes' Pokémon. Everyone gets sidetracked, though, when May and Jessie get into a tiff over which of their Wurmple is cuter. Our heroes chase off Team Rocket, but the two Wurmple get switched in the fray. Ash and company track down Team Rocket, and May and Jessie agree to trade back their Wurmple, but Jessie swipes both of them! Ash fights off Team Rocket, and May gets her Wurmple back. Ash and friends go to Granite Cave, where Steven Stone, the son of the Devon Corporation president, is said to be exploring. Unfortunately, Team Rocket has gotten there first, and has filled the cave with pitfalls to trap our heroes. The pitfalls collapse, sending our heroes and Team Rocket tumbling through the many levels of the cave. In the fall, everyone is shuffled into separate, mixed groups. Ash and crew have landed on a beach where they set up camp and to start training for Ash's rematch with Dewford surfing gym leader Brawly. But a mysterious Pokémon is lurking underground. Corphish is a welcome new member of Ash's team, but it's so boisterous that it can be a problem, like when it eats Wurmple's food or hugs May just a bit too hard. Corphish makes itself sick by eating some rope it found on the beach. Ash has forgotten his Poké Balls, so he has to carry Corphish on his back over a mountain and through Carvanha-infested waters to the nearest Pokémon Center. Ash and friends get separated from their Pokémon in a deep, dark cave. As the Trainers hunt down their Pokémon, Pikachu and the others get off on the wrong foot with a gang of Nuzleaf, who surround them as they discuss a fitting punishment for these intruders. Guided by Taillow, Ash and friends are quickly closing in, but unfortunately Team Rocket is a step ahead. Ash and friends meet up with Professor Birch and accompany him as he investigates some nearby caves. Inside one they discover a hidden room, occupied by a young boy named Keanu who quickly drives them out of what he calls his "secret base." Closely tailing Ash and friends, the Team Rocket trio don't respond nearly as politely to the boy's request, instead kicking him out and claiming the base (and Keanu's team of Nincada) for themselves. Corphish's bad attitude shows no signs of improving, and Ash plans to humble it a bit by putting a good scare into it deep inside an abandoned mine. Ash and friends cross the sea to a secret island arena for Ash's rematch with Gym Leader Brawly. Ash's skills have improved since the last time, and his Corphish and Treecko make the most of the rocky and watery environment. Ash and friends foil a Team Rocket kidnapping scheme on the high seas, but are then left high and dry themselves when Team Rocket's boat breaks down. Drifting with the tide, they eventually come to rest against an abandoned ship. On board, they meet one of the ship's original passengers, Tommy, who has returned to search for the Marshtomp he was separated from when the ship first ran aground. Happy to have found a ride back to land, Ash and friends offer to help this passenger in his search. As the group moves below deck, however, their party begins disappearing, one ...

Two weeks before the Slateport Pokémon Contest, May is training hard, trying to get her Beautifly to master its Silver Wind move. A battle with Ash's Taillow draws the attention of a retired Coordinator named Mr. Big, who offers May a Pokéblock case and invites our heroes to his shop for some useful Bluk Berries. Unfortunately, Torchic gets ahead of the gang and gobbles them all up! To make matters worse, Mr. Big had hoped to use them in his fireworks display that night. May is determined to replace the berries, but her rival Drew gets there first and demands a battle...

While May trains with Beautifly, Nurse Joy enlists Ash and Max to babysit a Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip, one of which will be the first partner of a brand-new Pokémon Trainer named Stephanie. Torchic proves to be the most rambunctious of the group, and when Ash sends several of his Pokémon to convince it to behave, it evolves into a Combusken! Moments before the new Trainer arrives, Max and Ash think fast and ask May's Torchic to stand in for the evolved Pokémon. While cutting through a mountain pass, Ash and friends decide to stop into the local Pokémon Center for directions. Imagine their surprise when they discover it vacated, with no sign of Nurse Joy. When Ash and friends get lost in a dark and foggy mountain pass, the first folks they meet are Jessie, James, and Meowth of Team Rocket, fresh from their latest heist. Ash and friends join the Trick House Contest, which sends them through a maze full of tricks and traps--and, of course, Team Rocket!

At the Mauville Gym, Ash and friends are whisked away on a roller-coaster ride and confronted by an angry Raikou--a Legendary Pokémon from the Johto region! An attack from Pikachu reveals the Raikou to be a robot, which shorts out, showering Pikachu in electricity. When the battle begins, Pikachu defeats each of Gym Leader Wattson's Electric-type Pokémon with just one attack, and Ash wins the Dynamo Badge!
