The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a radically new fighter plane design and the brainchild of now legendary aircraft designer Kelley Johnson. It's introduction to combat at the start of World War II was fought with issues. But changes to the hardware, pilot training, operational procedures, and combat tactics made it the deadliest fighter plane in the Pacific Theater.
