A snow-covered landscape shows mountains in the distance. Western Classical music pieces play. The narrator discusses the composers and shares his thoughts about life prior to his leaving for his army assignment in Tajikistan.

The narrator leaves Russia and travels to to an outpost in Tajikistan. He and his fellow soldiers spend time alternately going on patrols and relaxing as they adjust to the hot, dry climate.

The soldiers travel to a remote outpost. They improve the defenses, cook food and go on patrols in the surrounding hills while battling boredom. The narrator wonders if their efforts will make any difference to the people back home.
