200 years ago, Dutch king Willem II ended the bloody, endless-seeming siege of the town Hughevliet by accepting a chess challenge from the rebellious Huguenot leader, Stadtholder (lord lieutenant) Schimmelpenninck. Local legend says he was nearly blown up by 100 barrels of gun powder under the church, but no proof was found, so history dismissed that.
