It's 1897 and a city is in turmoil. Young local doctor, Richard Howell, is chased and brutally attacked in the empty midnight streets of Stoke-On-Trent. In the idyllic countryside of Buxton, Richard's brother, country vet Newlyn Howell, is informed of his disappearance by a mysterious man in black.

At his brother's house, Newlyn crosses paths with investigative journalist Anna Fitzgerald, who is also looking into the missing persons cases in Stoke-On-Trent. Following a clue left behind by Richard, Newlyn and Anna decide to pay a visit to mysterious and reclusive pottery factory owner Linus Hemlock.
